This was a dark and mysterious trip. I was staying in a Hollywood flophouse, the guy in the next room to me died after never closing the door. I decided to visit Spahn Ranch while things cooled down. As I stood on the ranch overlooking the damage done to the trees — shot up by The Family — a gunshot rang out. Definitely a real gun. It couldn’t have been fired from more than 20 yards away from me and I was alone. I should have been scared. I should have run. I stayed and continued to lay down inside the famous Life Magazine Rock, to sit on Charlie’s Rock — where he would play guitar in the natural rock amphitheater for Hollywood Producers and Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys and did a lot of other stuff. I had some kind of remote, indescribable experience I can’t fully lay down here. Afterwards I found myself on Hollywood Boulevard. And the first song I hear playing in the street? “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da". Life Goes On.
