SINGLE-TASKING FOR PRODUCTIVITY

HOW TO BE MORE PRODUCTIVE WITH SINGLE TASKING. Single tasking, or the "one-task-at-a-time" method helps you to increase productivity and effectiveness and get more done with less stress. If you feel like you're constantly being pulled in multiple directions and have to-lists on top of to-do lists without feeling like you're actually getting much of anything done... then this is the perfect time to try a different approach to your work-flow,: single-tasking. I briefly spoke about the benefits of single tasking in a previous video, and now I want to share with you some tips for sticking with this effective productivity method and getting the most out of it. 1. De-crease your to-do list. If something takes less than 5 minutes, does it really need to be on your to-do list?, or can you just do it now and not have to think about it again? David Allen, the author of the popular productivity book, Getting Things Done teaches "The 2-Minute Rule" and says that : If you determine an action can be done in two minutes, you actually should do it right then because it’ll take longer to organize it and review it. Basically, Just do it now so you don't have to waste more time in the future thinking about it. 2. Identify your most important task of the day and set to work on it as soon as possible in the morning. Have a single-track mind and really prioritize getting that one thing done. If you could choose only one important task to complete that whole day and feel like it would be a productive, successful day if that one thing were completed, what would it be? Write it down and get to work on it. This is a great place to start when it comes to developing the abilities to focus your attention. time management expert, Brian Tracy has a book based entirely on this success principle, called "Eat That Frog" ,which I will link in the description box and he says that “Your ability to select your most important task, to begin it, and then to concentrate on it single-mindedly until it is complete is the key to high levels of performance and personal productivity." 3. Don't pick up your phone unless you really, really need to. Don't check social media, don't check emails, don't take a photo of something... every time you pick up your phone... there's the potential that you could be distracted by something else on your phone... like a text, a funny video your friend sends you, a 30% coupon in an email from your favorite store... etc... when you're working on something - give it your all - give it all of your attention, effort and creative energy... and leave your phone alone until that important task is completed. You have to be really strict about this if you're going to develop the type of discipline you need to truly single task and prioritize productivity. 4. Use a timer. If you're about to work on a task that you know will take 3 hours to complete and you don't have a full 3 hours to do it now. Use a timer and work for a full 30 minute or 1 hour segment of time. During that time, try your best not to get distracted and to fully use that time to work on that tasks exclusively.
