Setting off from Hugh Town quay, this anti-clockwise route skirts the historic Garrison walls, rolls past Porthcressa Beach, winds around Peninnis Head, and ends on the sheltered sands of Old Town Bay. It’s a walk through centuries of history and some of the most remote beauty in England. 🕰️ Highlights, History & Local Lore St Mary’s may be small, but it wears its history like armour. From the very start, you pass through Hugh Town, the island’s hub and gateway to the archipelago. Then come the Garrison walls—built in the late 16th century as part of England’s coastal defences. These bastions were designed to fend off the Spanish, and today their broad ramparts offer sweeping sea views and echoes of cannon fire long fallen silent. Below, Porthcressa Beach curves quietly against the southern edge of town, a popular spot for swimmers, artists, and seabirds alike. The path hugs the shore here, gentle and inviting, before it grows wilder at Peninnis Head—a rugged headland bristling with granite tors and battered by Atlantic winds. The lighthouse here was built in 1911 and still stands watch from the rocks, its white tower a lonely sentinel on the edge of the world. The route finishes Part 1 at Old Town Bay, once the island’s main harbour and still dotted with traces of its former importance. The little church here, St Mary’s Old Church, dates to the 12th century and shelters the graves of early settlers—and more recently, former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, who loved these islands so much he chose to be buried here. This is a walk through layered time: fortifications, fishing villages, lonely graves and restless seas—all wrapped in the timeless hush of island air. 📍 Walk Starting Point (What3Words): ///resolved.announced.unwound 🗺️ Full Map of All Walks, Drives, and My Ever-Growing To-Do List: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/1/edi... 📽️ Walk Stats • Walk #276 • Time: 2pm – 26th April 2025, English Spring • Difficulty: ⭐⭐ 2 / 5 A few steep and tricky sections underfoot • Beauty: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 / 5 • Steps: 8,571 • Distance: 3.91 Miles / 6.29 km • Weather: Bit windy.
