This video discusses Lumbar Spinal Stenosis and Cardiac Amyloidosis. Amyloidosis occurs when misfolded proteins accumulate in the body, including the heart. Transthyretin is a protein that can lead to transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy. Symptoms include shortness of breath, decreased exercise tolerance, swelling, and abnormal heart rhythms. Treatments can stabilize the protein or reduce its production. Interestingly, patients with spinal stenosis surgery may have amyloid deposits in the removed tissue, indicating potential heart issues. Free cardiac testing is offered to those with spinal amyloid, enabling early detection and treatment. This opportunity allows individuals to safeguard their heart health and receive necessary care at no cost. Dr. Maurer is a general internist and geriatric cardiologist with advanced training in heart failure and cardiac transplantation. He is the Arnold and Arlene Goldstein Professor of Cardiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons, where directs the Clinical Cardiovascular Research Laboratory for the Elderly (CCRLE). Dr. Maurer is a member of the Advanced Cardiac Care Center at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital – Columbia Campus. He is the Director of the Cardiac Amyloidosis Program.
