A co-convenor of Atin Ito coalition urged government to “reconsider what friendship means” following calls by some leaders to treat China as an ally despite Beijing’s aggressive maneuvers in the West Philippine Sea. “Yan po siguro mga nagbabanggit niyan ay sanay sa mga abusive relationships. Alam naman po natin ang hirap makipagkaibigan kung alam natin na sinasaktan tayo at hina-harrass ‘yung mga mangingisda natin. Tapos nagkakalat pa ng kasinungalingan at chismis tungkol sa atin,” Akbayan party president Rafaela David said. “So napakahalaga na bilang mga political leaders natin, we hope that they do not mistake hospitality and friendship with complicity to China's bullying.” She added: “Ang friendship dapat ay patas, pantay-pantay at may pagrespeto.
