Magnetic Compass – Air Bubble Removal Process: A ship’s magnetic compass works properly only when it’s filled with liquid and free of air bubbles. Sometimes, due to heat, movement, or minor leaks, air bubbles can form inside the compass bowl. These bubbles can affect the compass reading and must be removed. Here’s how the air bubble is removed: 1. Check the Compass: Look through the glass dome and confirm the presence of an air bubble inside the compass liquid. 2. Locate the Filling Plug: Most compasses have a small filling plug or screw on the top or side. This is used to add compass fluid and remove air. 3. Open the Plug Carefully: Unscrew the filling plug slowly to avoid sudden pressure release. Make sure the ship is stable during this process. 4. Add Compass Liquid: Use the recommended compass fluid (usually alcohol-based or a special mineral oil) and slowly fill it through the plug until the air bubble disappears. 5. Re-seal the Plug: Once the bubble is gone, securely tighten the plug to prevent future leaks. 6. Clean and Re-check: Wipe off any excess fluid and check the compass again to ensure there are no bubbles left.
