Shiva’s Transformation: This mantra helps to direct the mind towards purification and acheaving pure transcendental love, while simultaniously releasing past negative patterns. When God, named Krishna, was performing the Rasa-lila with the gopis in Vrindavan, many great gods and sages desired to witness this enlighted transcendental pastime. However, only saint devotees — those who had realized their true selves, were pure in heart, and free from material desires, having completely surrendered to never ending love for Krishna — could participate in it. Lord Shiva, having a great desire to see this divine Rasa-lila, came to Vrindavan. However, Yogamaya, Krishna’s internal illusory energy, stopped him, explaining that only gopis could enter this mystical dance. Following Yogamaya’s advice, Shiva immersed himself in the sacred lake of Mansarovar. As soon as he emerged from the water, his form had changed—he had become a beautiful young girl. In this form, he was granted permission to witness the Rasa-lila and to serve as its guardian, and Krishna mercifully accepted him into the circle of his closest companions. From that time, Shiva in this form has been known as Gopeshvara Mahadeva. Before entering the sacred levels of love to God, devotees pray to Gopeshvari Mahadevi to receive blessings for true, pure devotional love for the Absolute, free from all contaminations of the mind.
