"Lee Fore Brace" is a poem by C. Fox Smith (published in 1923. Smith was a fascinating British writer whose poetry drew on her experience wandering wharfs in Victoria, British Columbia. There's much to explore about her poetry and various musical interpretations of her work here: http://j.mp/CFoxSmithMudcat The musical setting of the poem in this video is by Andy Revkin. This recording is by Uncle Wade, with Revkin singing. More of Andy's music is here: http://j.mp/revkinmusic http://j.mp/revmusic Lyrics: Lee Fore Brace Intro: Em - A - Am - Em … repeat 2X. Em C G D There were 10 men hauling on the lee fore brace in the rain and the driving hail. Em C D A With the mile-long graybeards chargin’ by in a thundering Cape Horn gale. Em C G D That dark it was, you scarce could see your hand before your face; Em C D A That cold it was, our fingers froze stiff as they gripped the brace. C G C G An' "Christ!" yells Dan, "for a night in port An' a drunken fiddler's tune, C Em D A ….. Em, A, Am, Em (repeat) An' ah for another round of drinks in a Callao saloon!" There was ten men haulin' on the lee fore brace When the big sea broke aboard; Like a broken dam, a foaming flood fight fore an' aft it poured. The ship, she staggered an' lay still — So deep, so dead lay she, You'd think she could not rise again From such a weight of sea. CHORUS There was ten men haulin' on the lee fore brace . . . Seven when she rose at last; The rest was lost to the pitch-dark night, An' the sea, an' the wintery blast. An' one of them was Irish Pete, An' one was Lars the Dane, An' the third was the lad whose like on earth I shall not find again. CHORUS An' I'll heave an' haul an' stand my watch, An' reef an' furl wi' the rest . . . For the wind and the seas go on the same, When they've took an' drowned the best. An' it ain't no use to curse the Lord, Nor it makes no sense to mourn, For a man must live his life the same, An' keep his grief his own. CHORUS More Revkin tunes: http://www.myspace.com/andyrevkin
