Landscapes of intuition - intuitive piano improvisation

Quand le piano n’a pas les réponses, il pose des questions, ou laisse les choses en suspens, irrésolues. Alors je vais l’appeler, comme je fais parfois, d’une mélodie, de quelques notes choisies, où le hasard aura posé sa patte, attendant qu’il guide ma main pour les soutenir. C’est la main droite qui vole, hésite à se poser, découvre, chante. C’est la main gauche qui attend d’exprimer la réponse, le soutien du piano, qui dans ces moments là ne vient pas, reste absent. Alors la main gauche s’obstine, car les notes égrénées à la droite ne peuvent rester en suspensions, en tension, elle cherche et le mental impose un choix. Quelque chose qui va sonner juste, mais limité, non inspiré. Quelque chose de convenu, et fermé, qui n’ouvre pas la conversation mais qui apporte une sorte de confort, sec et stérile, laissant l’invitation, la proposition initiale non-résolue. Alors je déconstruis l’attente, I strip down the expectations, et je laisse les mains prendre des formes nouvelles, des enchainements nouveaux. Et dans cette danse arythmique, j’essaie de laisser venir. Le piano, ce matin là, a suggéré des harmonies, mais ne laissant que des ouvertures et des questions, sans apporter de résolution, de réconfort. Il y a une différence, à mon sens, entre improvisation et jeu intuitif. En laissant entrer l’intuition, en acceptant de lâcher prise sur le résultat, celui-ci peut nous surprendre. C’était le cas lors de cette session, l’une des toutes dernières que j’ai eu avec ce piano avec lequel j’ai eu la chance d’avoir un dialogue pendant presque une année. Ce piano choisi avec l’aide de @ChrisMiggells, chez @SherwoodPhoenix, pour nos amis de l’institut français d’Ecosse (@VanBis1 ). ENGLISH VERSION When the piano does not have answers, it is asking questions, or leaves things suspended, unresolved. When it is so, I would reach out to the piano, as I do sometimes, with a melody, a few notes half chosen, waiting for its guidance to sustain them, perhaps with a hint of luck. My right hand takes off, flies, hesitates to land, unravels, sings. The left one awaits, to express the answer, the response and support from the piano, in its own notes. It sometimes remains absent. The left hand doesn’t settle for this, for the right hand’s notes can’t stay up in the air, in tension. And so it seeks, and the conscious mind imposes a choice. Something which will sound quite right, but limited, uninspired. Something already heard, closing. Chords which won’t open a conversation, but will bring some kind of comfort, even sterile, letting the first invitation unresolved. Then I have to let go of the result and strip down expectations, and let the hands draw new shapes, new progressions. And in this arrhythmic dance, I am open to what is coming. The piano, on that morning, was suggesting harmonies, but only openings and questions, without bringing resolution, nor comfort. There’s a difference, in my opinion, between improvisation and intuitive playing. When welcoming intuition, when accepting to let go of the result, the latter can surprise us. It was the case during this session, one of the latest I had with this piano, a 1972 Yamaha Concert, which I had the luck to discuss with for almost a year.
