"Jiu Kuang" (Wine Madness) This piece begins with wine as its muse, using the cup's solace to lose worldly sorrows. Here, the zhongruan takes up the voice of the guqin, weaving in a novel delight. It bridges traditions and cultures, embodying the all-embracing spirit where “wine knows no bounds”—ensuring this golden chalice of inspiration is never lifted in vain. Shen Qi Mi Pu (The Mysterious and Marvelous Tablature): In the preface, the compiler Zhu Quan, who styled himself “the Recluse Immortal,” notes: This piece was composed by Ruan Ji, a famed poet and thinker of the Wei-Jin period. Ji lamented that the true Way found no course in his world and that he stood apart from his age. Thus, he cast the world's cares beyond the confines of flesh and bone, pouring his inspiration into the vessel of wine to voice the aspiration that would content his lifelong spirit. Yet is its essence truly mere craving for wine? The Way dwells within it. Its mystery lies therein, and thus it is not spoken to the common ear—only the enlightened attain it. Compiled and published in 1425 by Zhu Quan, the Prince of Ning during the Ming Dynasty, Shen Qi Mi Pu (The Mysterious and Marvelous Tablature) stands as the earliest and most completely preserved dedicated collection of guqin tablature in existence in China. The anthology is divided into three volumes containing a total of sixty-four pieces. The first volume, entitled Tai Gu Shen Pin (Divine Pieces of Great Antiquity), includes sixteen compositions such as "Guangling San," "Jiu Kuang," and "Gu Feng Cao"—described as "secret melodies from remote antiquity, passed down by none." The middle and final volumes, collectively titled Xia Wai Shen Pin (Divine Pieces Beyond the Rosy Clouds), contain forty-eight pieces including "Wu Ye Ti," "Da Hu Jia," and "Li Sao," which the compiler noted were tunes he "had received in the past," largely comprising qin works widely circulated during the Song and Yuan dynasties. Hailed as the most prestigious transmitted tablature in history, it remains a treasured gem for all guqin practitioners. The year 2025 marks the 600th anniversary of Shen Qi Mi Pu’s publication. To honor this milestone, Zi De Guqin Studio offers music in place of wine, reanimating ancient harmonies and reinventing their sounds, inviting all connoisseurs of the art to share in an intoxicating journey through strings and wood. This album presents live recordings from the Shen Qi Mi Pu 600th Anniversary Concert, which features thirteen pieces carefully selected from the tablature. Among them, five—"Shan Ju Yin," "Qiao Ge," "Tian Feng Huan Pei," "Da Hu Jia," and "Guang Ling San"—are performed as guqin solos, evoking echoes of timeless antiquity: the legendary axe-handle turning to dust, ethereal jade-like tones, frontier reed-pipes beyond the Great Wall, and the fierce clangor of spear and shield. Another six pieces—"Xuan Mo," "Yi Lan," "Lie Zi Yu Feng," "Fan Cang Lang," "Li Sao," and "Gu Feng Cao"—are newly arranged from ancient themes, blending silk and bamboo instruments in harmonious dialogue that honors the sages and stirs the soul; here one may sense a spirit wandering free from worldly cares, and glimpse a heart that ceaselessly seeks truth. The remaining two, "Jiu Kuang" and "Wu Ye Ti," are adapted from the original qin scores and recast for the ruan and the pipa; listen closely, and you may catch the crows squabbling over their nest, or join the unrestrained revelry of the Bamboo Grove. Six hundred years of qin melody—behold the lofty mountain, and hear its voice in today’s strings. Six hundred years of qin spirit—like ever‑flowing streams, it awaits the listening heart.
