West Lake Corridor Project Update - Monon Rail Restoration in Munster Indiana (Late 2024) - Part 1

FILMED ON (12/17/24) In this video, I will continue to update you guys on progress of the West Lake Corridor line which was formerly the Monon line. The Monon rail line was has been abandoned for almost 3 decades now and it was announced in late 2020, that NITCD South Shore line would be restoring this abandoned line. I made a video a couple of years ago showing the old ex-PRR and Monon diamond which still remained until around 2021-2022. The PRR is still an abandoned line but most of its NE Illinois and NW Indiana part has been converted to a rail trail. The Monon was a rail trail until the South Shore claimed that land and the portion from Ridge Road in Munster to 173rd in Hammond is gone. The old rail bridge that the trail ran over is demolished and they are building a new bridge that will serve the South Shore Line. Anything from 173rd til Hohman Ave is going through major progress at this time and is almost complete. They are building 3-4 new stations, one in Munster, one in Hammond, (they are remodeling the one in north Hammond), and the Munster/Dyer Station. The line will eventually connect with the original line which goes from South Bend to Chicago and the new line will connect those 2 cities to now the 2 towns of Munster and Dyer and the city of Hammond. From the time I was there at the beginning of the year, many things have progressed. They added all the crossing signals, color light signals, catenaries, bridges, station platforms, rails, etc. Stay tuned for part 2 which I will be filming in the next few days or so.
