Cantoque Ensemble held a concert under the direction of Steinar Logi Helgason at the Dark Music days in Reykjavík in 2022. The program featured vocal compositions by the renowned Icelandic composer Jón Nordal. Nordal is without a doubt one of Iceland's most important composers. He has dedicated a significant portion of his composition output to a cappella vocal music, e.g. works like Aldasöngur, Vorkvæði um Ísland and Lux mundi. This program gives a good overview of Nordal´s diverse vocal compositions, from the sensual chromaticism in Lux mundi, national characteristics in his folk arrangements to the bittersweet and nostalgic romanticism of Smávinir fagrir. Nordal’s choir music has a special place in the musical heart of Iceland and we believe it has a great relevance to the rest of the world. Jon Nordal (1926-) is a prominent Icelandic composer, pianist and teacher. His contributions have made an important mark on Icelandic musical life, his works immersed in Icelandic culture. He studied in Reykjavik, Zurich, Copenhagen, Paris, Rome and Darmstadt. At an early age, the influence of Hindemith was obvious in his Concerto for Orchestra (1949). He was inspired by Theodore Adorno, Webern and Darmstadt as well, Nordal’s most outstanding orchestral works are Choralis (1982) for Viola and Orchestra which employs the Icelandic folk tune of Lilja and was commissioned by Maestro Rostropovich for the Scandinavia Today Exposition in Washington DC, and Tvísöngur in Violin. A member of the Darmstadt Circle in late 1950’s, from 1957 to 1992, Nordal was the director of Reykjavik College of Music. He is highly acclaimed as a proponent of new Icelandic music.
