Welcome to Bored and Confused! Today I'm reviewing Machinal, the 1928 Sophie Treadwell play now playing at NYC City Center Stage Two, directed by Amy Marie Seidel. This experimental production gives a scrappy, modern downtown treatment to a classic expressionist work inspired by the real-life Ruth Snyder murder case. Going in completely blind (as always!), I found myself navigating a highly stylized production featuring tap dancing, rhythmic speaking, fluid casting, and inventive minimal design. While the presentational acting style and experimental approach don't always land perfectly, there's real bite in Treadwell's writing and genuine commitment from this fearless creative team. Timestamps: 0:00 - Introduction & Show Overview 0:34 - Background on Sophie Treadwell & Machinal 1:26 - Plot Summary & Themes 2:03 - Opening Scene & Stylistic Choices 3:24 - Lead Performance by Katherine Winter 4:11 - Supporting Cast Highlights 5:26 - Production Design & Visual Elements 6:23 - Final Verdict: Bored? Confused? 7:27 - Why See This Show? If you're into experimental theater or rarely-produced classics with modern twists, this inventive (if uneven) production is worth checking out. Running through early July at City Center!
