On curbline routes, the working trays of letter and flat mail should be placed on the vehicle’s working shelf with the addresses faced so the carrier can easily read them. Flat mail is placed to the right of the letter mail.” M-39 125.1 "Flat mail is placed to the right of the letter mail. After loading the carrier must take empty equipment and parcels missorted to the route to a location designated by the delivery unit manager.” Handbook PO-701 Section 245.28 "Do not leave mail in an unlocked truck, even at a mail platform, unless opened door(s) of the vehicle are in full view and can be reached quickly if a theft is attempted.” M-41 291: ”Withdraw preferential mail(Sleepers & Hot Case) from final case when leaving office. This mail is to be routed in delivery sequence as deliveries are made.” M-41 922.51g: ”An allowance of 5 minutes is permitted for personal needs, obtaining hat and coat from wall racks before leaving office, visiting swing room to obtain rain gear from locker, etc.” M-00063 "On days that carriers use self-service gas pumps to fuel their assigned vehicles, they will be allowed to wash their hands.” M-41 337.2 "Government checks and bonds include those issued by states, counties, and cities; and those issued for welfare assistance. Make sure checks are placed in the correct receptacles and, if practicable, behind other mail matter.” M-41 812.4 "Do not finger mail while driving or hold mail in your hands while the vehicle is in motion. You must use mirror to check for pedestrians ahead, in back, and on both sides before placing the vehicle in motion.” POM Section 632.627.D “Failure to keep boxes locked or in proper repair as directed by postmasters is sufficient justification for withholding mail delivery and requiring occupants to call for their mail at the Post Office or carrier delivery unit serving the location. A reasonable notice of approximately 30 days will be given in writing to the customers and the owner or manager of the apartment building.” Handbook EL-814: "Use your turn signal before turning, changing lanes, or pulling to or away from the curb or shoulder of the road, such as when a car or trash is blocking your way.” POM Section 632.14 "Where the approach to the mail receptacle located at the curb is temporarily blocked by a parked vehicle during normal delivery hours for the area, The carrier normally dismounts to make delivery.” Handbook PO-701 Section 245.28 "For vehicles with separate driver and cargo compartments, only working mail should be kept in the driver’s compartment while performing delivery and collection duties. Internal cargo doors must be closed and locked when the vehicle is parked.” ELM 814.2.G "Drive defensively & professionally; extend courtesy in all situations; and obey all state, local and postal regulations when driving a vehicle owned, leased or contracted for by the Postal Service.” M-41 812.5 "Arrange letter mail, flat mail, and small parcels in the work tray provided on the ledge behind the windshield so as not to obstruct vision or use of the vehicle controls. Trays must not be piled on top of other trays on the ledge behind the windshield.” Handbook EL-814 "When collecting mail or when delivering mail to CBUs that are equipped with an arrow lock, remove the arrow key from the lock to avoid personal injury or damage to your clothing or keys. Keep the chain for your mailbox keys securely fastened to your belt loop & place the keys and chain in your pocket when you are not using them. Dangling, swinging keys and chains can be dangerous.” M-41 321.4 "If a parcel does not fit completely within the mail receptacle or parcel locker, determine if someone is available at the address by ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door.” USPS Safety Talks: Slips, Trips, and Falls: ”If you must carry objects up or down a stairway, the load should be small enough to allow one hand to be free to hold the railing.” M-41 232.1: ”If customers cannot sign on the device, collect his or her signature & printed names on PS Form 3849, Delivery Notice/Reminder/ Receipt. The delivery address should be recorded on the barcoded side of PS Form 3849. Scan the barcode on PS Form 3849 after obtaining recipient signature and printed name.” M-41 112.29: ”A motorized carrier unloads his vehicle & then immediately records returning time.” M-41 823: ”Inspect the inside of the vehicle for mail matter after completing street duties.” M-41 841.2: ”Inspect truck to determine if any damage has occurred while truck was in your custody. If damage has occurred, complete forms.”
