ANNA CAZURRA Tensho Anna Tonna, mezzosoprano Max Lifchitz, conductor The North/South Chamber Orchestra Distinguished mezzo-soprano Anna Tonna sang the poems in their original Catalan. Tonna is renowned for her advocacy of music by Hispanic and Latin American composers and is in high demand as a performer in the tri-state area as well as throughout Spain and Europe. Anna Cazurra has been commissioned by prestigious musical institutions in Spain and Europe. Guided by Spanish composer Josep Soler, she earned degrees in composition and in music pedagogy at the Universitat de Barcelona. Her postmodern aesthetic features strong tonal foundations, enriched by her fascination with diverse folkloric traditions. Cazurra's song cycle, "Tensho," was heard for the first time as a work for voice and strings. Based on poetry by Catalan poet Carlos Duarte, "Tensho" means "the arrival of a new era" in Japanese. Each of the five-song cycle explores various feelings about nature, touching on themes related to the sky, the sun, autumn, and the countryside. Rere la nit (After the Night) represents the sunrise that prevails over the darkness of the night. The sun emerges like a ball of fire and accompanies you on your path to reach the summit, symbolically giving you the energy to undertake the day-to-day tasks. Respirar el món (Breathing the World) conveys a feeling of aging. We still have the desire to live, but we feel the fatigue of a long life (like that of the stars) that remains in the past (falls asleep). Ja no existeix (He is not alive) conveys a sense of nostalgia and mourning; we yearn for someone who was with us and has since departed, leaving us a symbolic legacy that we cherish and appreciate. The sang de l'air (The Blood of the Air) represents the fall of the day, with its contrasts: the intense red of twilight and the iridescence of pink that makes us long for the past. It reminds us of the images of the fields in autumn, lonely and sprinkled with the red colors of the sunset. The shadows appear that announce the night and the coming of a new day El cel (The Sky) is a pure joy, with the intense blues of the sky in broad daylight and the desire to go out into the world and breathe life deeply. Every day you are born is an opportunity to be reborn. TENSHO (the emergence of a new era) Lyrics by Carlos Duarte -- Music by Anna Cazurra Rere la nit (After the Night) After the night, beyond the precipice of shadows, the fire, the Sun, rises like a flame. You feel the horizon that is emerging inside you, the air that lights up, the peak you reach. Respirar el món (Breathing the World) Breathing the world, feel, that the days slowly pass through us. Intuit the fatigue of the stars, know that the time we have known falls asleep Ja no existeix (The One That No Longer Exists) The one that no longer exists only between us and the fruit that you pick and taste. The shapes that the clay sculpted to summon life. La sang de l’aire (The Blood of the Air) The blood of the air, the rain of light of this twilight. The rose, the red, dyeing our gaze from the past. The distant solitude of the burning fields of autumn; From the shadows you see the future that is coming. El cel (The Sky) The sky, tireless spiral of the blues of the blues eyes enthralled in infinity, the face that smiles Breathing the world and be reborn.
