Sir Edru celebrated his birthday with his family. Little did he know that the resident members and alumni of the group he founded and led, the Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino (Kontra-GaPi), would be surprising him with, not just two birthday celebrations, but also a song with him as subject and theme. Everything began in late May. Members of Kontra-GaPi, the resident music and dance ensemble of the College of Arts and Letters, UP Diliman, came together to create an original song of gratitude to honor Sir Edru. On June 27, 2021, the video featuring the song “Para Kay Sir Edru” premiered in Sir Edru’s two surprise post-birthday zoom parties. On August 12, Kontra-GaPi celebrates its anniversary. Founded by Sir Edru in 1989, the ensemble continues to draw inspiration from indigenous Philippine cultures and arts even as travel to various parts of the country and the world have become part of its institutional history. ---------------------------------- PARA KAY SIR EDRU An Original Song of Gratitude by Members of Kontra-GaPi to Honor Prof. Pedro Reyes Abraham, Jr. Tila isang sanggol Na wala pang nalalaman Kami’y tinuruan mo Sayaw at tono, gong at ritmo Unti-unting namulat Sa pamana ng mga ninuno Minahal ang sining katutubo Sa Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino Uuuuuhhhhhhhh Dumagsa, mga kaibigan Nakasama, mga hinangaan Damang-dama ang pagmamahal Sa bigkis ng samahan Hinulma ang aking diwa Sa pagtatanghal at ensayo Sa tambayan ng puso Natutong humarap sa tao Bago magtanghal ay puno ng kaba Napakasaya kapag performance na!
