Discovering Olomouc: The Secret Baroque Gem of the Czech Republic

Today, we explore Olomouc, one of the most surprising and lesser-known cities in the Czech Republic. Although we originally planned to end our journey in Prague, we decided to make a stop in this hidden gem located in the Moravia region. With its historic center, the second most important in the country after Prague, Olomouc captivated us with its impressive Baroque architecture, history-filled squares, and monumental fountains. Our visit begins in Upper Square, where we find the majestic Town Hall and its famous Astronomical Clock, the only one in the world with a socialist theme. We also discover several fountains featuring mythological representations, such as the Hercules Fountain, the Caesar Fountain, and the Arion Fountain, among many others. One of the city's most iconic landmarks is the Holy Trinity Column, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unfortunately, it was under restoration during our visit. Nonetheless, we continue exploring Lower Square, where we find the Marian Plague Column and more spectacular fountains, such as Neptune's Fountain and Jupiter's Fountain. From there, we continue through the historic center and visit iconic sites such as St. Wenceslas Cathedral, with its impressive Neo-Gothic tower over 100 meters high, the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, and the Archbishop's Palace. Finally, we conclude our tour by strolling along the banks of the Morava River, enjoying the last views before heading to Italy and the stunning Dolomites.
