WALKS IN DORSET at CRANBORNE & BOVERIDGE

In this episode of my series “ Walks Dorset” , I take a “Winter” walk in and around the village of Cranborne. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan. My 5 mile circular route commences with a look around the village. I start with an exploration of the Church of St Mary & St Bartholemew. The site of the old medieval Abbey is just to the south of the church on private land. Passing by both pubs in the village (the Fleur-De- Lys & the Sheaf of Arrows), my route takes me past the Jubilee Gardens and out into the countryside. I head West close to the banks of the River Allen & catch a glimpse of the impressive Cranborne Manor House – one of the oldest domestic buildings in England. At Cranborne Farm I was hoping to continue on a detour North Westwards to find the source of the River Crane but sadly a bridge over the river was broken & it was too deep to ford! Instead, I follow initially the Jubilee Trail Northwards to Jack's Hedge Corner (where there was once a Romano British settlement – long since gone) and then Eastwards to the small hamlet of Boveridge. Although I was unable to view Boveridge House, I was able to walk by the delightful St Aldehelm's Chapel (now a private home) and the pretty thatched Almshouses. My final leg took me through the enchanting woods at Burwood before returning to my final destination – The Sheaf of Arrows pub in Cranborne. Map courtesy of Google Maps.
