Shariek Rutledge was invited in as a guest to a home on Ridgecrest Road months ago, according to Captain Michael Perkowski from the Greece Police Department. He eventually forced the owners out, changed the locks, invited other people to live here and established residency, Perkowski said. "The law states you now live there, and you have to go through eviction proceedings," he added. The homeowners were stuck going through court proceedings to force Rutledge and his companions out. The owners said they even had to pay utility bills because it's against the law to turn off services for squatters. As the community complained of illegal activity, a four-month police investigation ensued. "Some of it led to a prostitution detail that we did out of a local hotel, tying them into the prostitution ring out of that house," said Perkowski. "Neighbors were up in arms. I mean, generally, it's a quiet neighborhood. Everyone owns their houses there.” Police said they executed a search warrant Tuesday, uncovering a drug trafficking ring thick with cocaine, crack and fentanyl. Rutledge, 45, of Rochester was arrested, along with seven others: Roosevelt Speed, 46, of Rochester; Brittany Hollaert, 28, of Rochester; Dunia Amireh, 35, of Rochester; Shaqera Lee, 32, of Greece; Yanira Lopez, 24, of Greece; Brandon Smith, 41, of Greece; Mary Mickolichik, 60, of Greece. Perkowski said the eight suspects arrested were all familiar with each other — and to law enforcement — over the years. "Essentially, that's what they were into: larcenies and prostitution," said Perkowski. While he didn't dive too deep into his thoughts on bail laws, Perkowski said, "When you have these lower level crimes that are persistent and there's constant arrests, there's really not a lot of punishment." "It's a non-violent offense, and that's how the courts are treating it," he added. "But by not being able to put bail on somebody who is a career criminal for non-violent quality-of-life crimes, you allow them to continue doing it." All except Mickolichik were charged with criminal trespass. Speed was also charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell and criminal use of drug paraphernalia. Rutledge was also charged with grand larceny. Mickolichik was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance.
