This is a documentary on the Dukha-Tsaatan reindeer herders of Mongolia produced in 1983 by Mongol Kino, the state-run film firm . It was shot primarily in the East Taiga region of Tsagaan Nuur district of Hovsgol province and shows many of the reindeer herders who have since passed away. The main character of the film is an old man, the late Eregsel (a.k.a. Eregsed, who was married to the West Taiga shaman, Suyan, at the time of filming). The plot is laced with propaganda highlighting the government's "success" at modernizing the culture of the Dukha Tsaatan. Eregsel is portrayed by the narrator as having survived the "dark, primitive times" of "cultural backwardness" and illuminated by the new dawn of socio-economic progress." He refers to the changes as "am jahai dur-oo!" or "it's beautiful now!" in his Dukha dialect of Tuvan. This copy of the film was obtained by using a MiniDV camcorder to record the strip film as it was projected on to a sheet in the livingroom of the film's owner in Tsagaannuur. All rights belong to the late Mongol Kino. See Part 2 here: • Dukha Tsaatan - Lords of the Taiga - Taigy...
