Grenache has been in vineyards from the very first days of Australian viticulture. But grenache has never really had the full attention it deserves. Until recently, that is. Today, grenache in Australia is undergoing something of a renaissance. Makers are rethinking the possibilities for this unquestionably great grape, with many moving away from the dark side, making lighter bodied expressions. Rob Mack of Aphelion – who won the Young Gun of Wine Award in 2018 with grenache as his centrepiece – is one such maker. We love his 2021 Aphelion ‘Confluence’ Grenache from McLaren Vale. It has classic varietal characters of raspberry and spice showing bright and pretty, coupled with a herbal Campari side thanks to the use of stems via some ‘whole bunch’ fermentation. It’s a lighter red with depth to the flavour and a finesse to the tannins. It’s a warm region’s answer to growing pinot noir.
