Keloids are caused by poor scarring in genetically susceptible individuals as a result of a cut, piercing, or pimple. They can happen on the ears, face, chest, arms, and back and are often painful. I advise patients to avoid surgical excision of keloids at all cost because keloids will ALWAYS grow back bigger with time. The best way to get rid of the pain of keloids as well as flatten them is through repeated injections of Kenalog and 5-FU. In some instances, we also employ lasers as an adjunct treatment. For this patient, we were able to completely flatten her keloid after a few sessions of Kenalog and 5-FU injections.
