Relab team, CsCl crystal structure, mini video lesson (open educational resource in a form of a one-minute experiment) Abstract: This OMX lesson explains and illustrates a common problem in crystallography - determining lattice type and motifs in binary compounds. Caesium chloride has a cubic crystal lattice and at first glance, it appears to be a volume-centred cubic lattice, but this would be a false conclusion. As it is necessary to comply with the requirement that each lattice point has an identical environment in order for the periodicity to be valid, it is concluded that the structural motif must contain one caesium and one chlorine atom each and that the unit cell type is a simple cubic lattice. Keywords: lattice type, crystal motif, binary structure Literature: Bojana Nedić Vasiljević, Solid state physical chemistry, Faculty of Physical Chemistry, 2022. ISBN 9788682139874 Area: Physical chemistry/ Crystallography/Solid state physical chemistry Aim: The aim of the mini video lesson is to provide basic concepts of solid-state chemistry such as unit cell, motif and lattice. Purpose: Introduction to the CsCl crystal structure. Outcomes: To establish basic concepts necessary to understand the crystal structure of salts analysing CsCl. Users: students in the field of natural/ material science/solid state physical chemistry
