This is meant as a resource for anyone interested in hardcore. I loaded a savestate to the same seed if I failed, so I did have extra knowledge when doing these. Though I tried to only play with information I got from that attempt. Each clear was deathless and without savestates (except to restart if needed). ---------- I unfortunately don't have an easy way to do the level with the sub gone, so I didn't on these. (I would have to get key 2 which is stuck behind this level and entering key 2 despawns the DDD warp.) 00:00 seed 1 - 9m 00s 09:00 seed 2 - 8m 56s 17:56 seed 3 - 8m 39s 26:36 seed 4 - 8m 04s 34:40 seed 5 - 9m 30s ---------- DDD sometimes feels fine, other times the fish can be rough. Tips In vanilla, there aren't any yellow boxes in this level. Hardcore adds 2 to the sub area which both have a purple demon. This level doesn't have a large increase to the coin count like other levels which is due to water enemies not having coins. Rando/iron adds a few more coin formations to make getting 100's easier. (Otherwise, some coins might spawn out of bounds and there wouldn't be enough.) I like to check the blue coin platform early to see if it's safe enough to go for. Otherwise I might have to skip 100's. (I'm not sure how feasible 100's is here without the blue coins.) Be careful where you spawn the 100 coin star. I like to do it on the blue coin platform or elsewhere on land if it’s safe. The angle needed to open the chests is much more lenient than vanilla. The water bubbles from the chests have a large hitbox, but it’s a bit raised. Swim up and it should be free to grab. The manta ray and the sharks spawn the same way every time, so you can use them to help you find where the tunnel is faster. I like to get the sub area rings star early since the spawn might somehow be bad. (You can re-roll the spawn by getting another star then trying again.) The fish Generally, if you don't know where the fish are, you want to keep swimming to avoid them if they are chasing you. Depth perception can be a big issue in water levels. The fish may be closer than they appear. The large fish are known as bubbas and the small ones are known as bubs. The bubbas are certainly the scarier of the two, as they are quick, chase you long distances, and dive at you quickly. I'm unsure if they have a hardcore variant. It seems that the first/outside area will always have exactly 1 big fish. The bubs seem to barely swim vertically at all, so you can avoid them easily by swimming up or down. Also they ignore walls, so be careful since they may be hiding behind them. The land cam In the upper area, the joystick is somewhat disconnected from the camera. I find that pressing d-pad up helps it to work better. In the lower area, the camera is fine except that the camera can't go out of bounds near the back wall. This will make it hard to see if you turn it that way. The water camera The biggest issue with water levels is that it's hard to see. If you can comfortably swim and move the camera, you'll have a great advantage. I use an OEM N64 controller. So to turn the camera while swimming, I actually use a claw grip, though it takes some work to get good at. You can turn the camera and pause to keep the camera at that angle more easily. And of course, you can get a better look and stay safe while doing so. ---------- I use different settings to make it easy to get around the castle and play any level I want. Start with the hardcore 120 star preset, then change the below options: Warp options BitS stars needed: 0 (this being 50 or lower triggers lite mode, so that's why it shows 3 lives) randomize level warps: off randomize star doors: none Object options Change nothing Aethetics Do whatever you want here, it doesn't affect the settings id. Iron Mario Options Only the hardcore option affects the player id, do the others however you want. Gameplay mode options keep structure: off These should yield settings id 271776. ---------- Played with: Luna's Project64 (v3.6.3) IronMario 64 (v1.2) Detailed controller info: https://pastebin.com/FG1w97Nu ---------- Me: / dackage353 https://www.speedrun.com/user/Dackage
