Tragically, what he and two others believed was cocaine was actually pure fentanyl; Gage was the only one who didn’t survive. After 50 agonizing hours in the hospital, where Gretchin and her family watched him slip away, they learned the hospital never tested for fentanyl during his care. It took 10 months, a determined mother’s deep dive into medical records, and confirmation from hospital staff to correct the death certificate and confirm Gage died from acute fentanyl intoxication. With this revelation, prosecutors were finally able to charge two individuals with first-degree capital murder for distribution.
