The Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) is a thin lens made of plastic and collagen called ‘Collamer’. It is similar to a regular external contact lens but is placed inside the eye instead of the outer surface. This surgical procedure can improve your vision without the use of spectacles. The Toric ICL does not replace your natural lens but is implanted in front of it. Once implanted, it becomes completely invisible, requires no maintenance and you won’t even be able to feel it. The Toric ICL surgery treats high powers of nearsightedness and astigmatism (Cylindrical power) at the same time, eliminating the need of two separate surgeries and the need for glasses or contact lenses. While the Toric ICL technology has been available since 2011, the latest developments to the technology were made in 2018. Over time, Toric ICL has proven to be an extremely safe and effective option for better vision for many patients. Patients with thin corneas, who aren’t candidates for LASIK or patients who have residual refractive errors after other surgeries can benefit largely from Toric ICL surgery and lead a spectacle-free life. The procedure takes 20-30 minutes to complete. The full benefits of the surgery can be experienced within a week and complete recovery takes about a month. Toric ICL surgery has a number of benefits apart from fixing severe nearsightedness. The lens is less likely to cause dry eyes and provides great night vision. It’s meant to be permanent but can be removed. Your ophthalmologist will consider factors like your age, eye health and medical history to check if you’re an ideal candidate for this.
