From Scott Evans: A hundred years ago @benadrian and I took apart my favorite MXR Distortion+ to see why it sounded so good. Turned out it was broken. True story! The result was massively asymmetric clipping and a lot more volume than a normal D+. Ben made a short run of pedals with the break engineered in, and KWB #1 has been on my board since. But after he'd made a handful, Ben got a Real Job making guitar gear and had to stop selling his own pedals. Since then a lot of people have asked me where to get a KWB. Since Covid ground everything to a halt, I've built dozens of pedals and read a lot about circuits and finally figured I should try rolling my own. This was the obvious first choice. I tweaked Ben's circuit a bit, got rid of the "gse" knob (which adjusts the amount of brokenness - fuck that! All broke all the time) and added a Depth switch. The traditional D+ circuit gets thinner as you increase gain. The Depth switch adds back a gallon of low end. It's cool on bass or very chimey guitars. I think of this pedal as a very nasty boost. It doesn't have a ton of gain but it's very loud. It sounds great pummeling an edge-of-breakup tube amp. It also stacks real well with some pedals, which is how I use it for bulldozer mode.
