Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center recently became the first hospital in Chicago to offer bladeless surgery for cataracts with the newly developed LenSx laser. The new system, recently installed in the hospital's Vision Correction Center, offers patients more safety and individualization in their cataract removal surgery, according to Osvaldo I. Lopez, MD, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and medical director of the Vision Correction Center. The laser allows for more precision, meaning less surrounding tissue damage for the patient. This equates to faster healing times, less swelling and a lower risk of complications, Lopez said. The system is the most accurate available for cataract surgery, preprogrammed for each individual's eye, and takes seconds to perform.
