One day when I was scanning Google Maps (as you do), I spotted a weird circle that looked like a robot eye and was so beguiled (and perhaps spooked) that I ended up flying to the Netherlands to see it in person. Bit of an overreaction, I know. IJsseloog (no, that capitalised J is not a typo) is a bizarre-looking man-made island in the Dutch province of Flevoland, and it serves a rather unique purpose that solves quite a common problem; waste disposal!
