UnBelonging in my Fatherland is a collection of visual reflections on belonging in East Africa by an East-African-South-Asian-Canadian. In the past five years, I have spent significant time in East Africa, from where my Father’s family comes. Not having visited the region growing up, living there as an adult could be construed as a homecoming. But there too, just like in Canada, belonging was not found. This exhibition features photographs which I took in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda between 2011 and 2018. Accompanying the images are spoken anecdotes which capture ideas, dialogues, memories and contradictions around the region’s history, colonialism, racism, urbanization, migrations – and my insider-outsider identity. Even as I continue to search through East Africa’s buildings and streets in my memories, belonging eludes me. By showcasing Africa’s diversity, this exhibition aims to combat pervasive stereotypes about the African continent and its diaspora. I hope that reflecting on the universal feeling of unbelonging invites you to consider more deeply your own community and identity. -Nabila Walji
