How to Use Coco Coir for Planting

http://www.easysimplegardening.com How to Use Coco Coir for Planting Here are some links to the products we used: Coco Coir: https://amzn.to/3h1JRbV Perlite: https://amzn.to/2Y9lIcH This is the BEST growing medium for starting seeds and propagating cuttings. Notice I said “growing medium” instead of soil. A good growing medium supports the plant and provides an environment where the roots have a good balance of air and water for optimum growth. Growing mediums are different from soil because soil provides nutrients and more stability for long term growth. Coco coir comes from the brown inner husk of a coconut. The husk is simply peeled off, ground down and Viola! That’s it. It’s a very natural and sustainable way to grow plants. Be aware that coco coir naturally has a high salt content and some manufacturers don’t take the time to leach out the salt which can be harmful to your plants. That’s why we like Cocotek because they have low salt content. Coco coir is made up of 2 different parts, fiber and pith. Fiber is the chunky bits and pith is the fine fluffy part. It’s important to get one that has both parts. The coir that comes loose in a bag is mostly pith and is very expensive. The compressed block has a better fiber/pith ratio. Also the compressed block is a way better value. Coco coir naturally has a perfect 60-40 air to water retention ration which is almost PERFECT for plants. On its own, it’s almost too good at retaining water which is why we break it up with perlite. Perlit is very lightweight and porous which creates more space for air in the mixture which plant roots just love! The ratio we found is best is 50/50. This mixture is not only great for starting seeds and propagating cuttings, it’s a great space filler for planting in pots. Instead of using foam or soil to fill the pot, use this coco coir mixture to fill the space. Not only is it super lightweight but it will also help retain water. Coco coir is also a great soil amendment. If you have a clay soil in your yard, mix this coco coir/perlite mixture into the ground and it will drastically improve the soil quality. Note: This mixture does not have any nutritional value whatsoever. If you plan on planting in it long term then you need to fertilise it regularly with a complete fertilizer. A complete fertilizer has all three elements, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. All these elements are essential for plant growth. A good potting mix or garden soil usually has a decent balance of these three elements, which is what makes it a better option to grow in long term. Another benefit to this mixture is that it’s reusable. Since we’re not worried about nutrient depletion, you can actually reuse this mixture time after time with no performance degradation, another reason why this is a great sustainable growing medium.
