Join art historian Sandhini Poddar and Museum Director and curator Michelle Yun Mapplethorpe as they discuss the new series of paintings in the exhibition ‘Christine Ay Tjoe: Spinning in the Desert’ at White Cube Hong Kong (2021). Christine Ay Tjoe makes work that explores the human condition through internal processes in the body. Working across painting, drawing, sculpture and installation, she creates abstract energy fields that could be seen as metaphors for global trends, human emotions, and their impact on society at large. Looking back at some of the artist’s earlier works, Poddar and Yun Mapplethorpe explore how themes of philosophy and spirituality are physically embodied in Ay Tjoe’s mark-making.
