Dan Beckerman is president and CEO of Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), the world’s largest owner of sports teams, sports events and sports and live entertainment venues — which include L.A.’s Crypto.com arena and the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. He’s also a proud double Bruin who serves on UCLA Anderson’s board of advisors and teaches a management course titled The Agony and Ecstasy of Sports Management and Entertainment: Winning On and Off Field of Play. In conversation with Anderson’s Dean Tony Bernardo, Beckerman explained his career arc and how his UCLA education influenced his professional choices and interests. He discussed his leadership decisions during the pandemic lockdown and how AEG survived — and recovered — in an industry for which there’s no alternative to full-capacity live events. Beckerman shared his thoughts on the 2028 Summer Olympic Games, for which AEG is exclusive ticketing partner, and how the L.A.’s existing large venue footprint will help to make the games more environmentally sustainable. Beckerman said he feels lucky to work in an industry he’s passionate about and that he tries to lead with humility. “One of the reasons that it’s worked for me is because people know that I worked my way up through the ranks, very hands-on,” he said. He owes a lot to his accounting education, but he advises today’s MBA students to become fluent in the role analytics and AI play in a big business like AEG. “We are all in with building out our data capabilities and digital marketing platform,” he said. In 2016, UCLA Anderson awarded Beckerman the school’s Game Changer Award in recognition of how successfully he has pushed the frontiers of innovation in the entertainment industry.
