Common Gallinules eat vegetation, seeds, snails, and insects. They pick grass, duckweed, and flower seeds from the water surface or just below the surface. After each dive, the Anhinga must dry its feathers in the sun. They do not have waterproof feathers. The Great Egret is a dazzling sight in the wetland. They hunt in classic heron fashion, standing immobile or wading through wetlands to capture fish with a deadly jab of their yellowbill. Great Egrets fly slowly but powerfully: with just two wingbeats per second, their cruising speed is around 25 miles an hour. Killdeer Tree Swallows are highly social, forming large migratory and wintering flocks. They bathe by flying low over the water skimming their bodies against the surface, then rising quickly while shaking off droplets.
