Inertia describes an observed behavior of objects: that they do not accelerate if no force is applied to them. This means for example that an object will keep moving at a constant speed in a given direction forever, unless a force acts upon it. Though abundantly observed, there has not been a good theory to explain this behavior - until now. Enter Mike McCulloch's quantum inertia theory, a radical proposal that seeks to explain this phenomenon by weaving together the threads of relativity and quantum mechanics. What’s neat about the theory is that it has made successful predictions about the mysterious galaxy rotation curves and “impossible” orbital velocities in very wide binary stars, among other puzzling features in cosmology and astronomy. The theory not only sheds light upon longstanding celestial enigmas, but also opens up tantalizing possibilities in spacecraft propulsion. McCulloch and his collaborators hypothesize that manipulating the quantum vacuum could generate thrust without the need for a propellant, potentially revolutionizing space travel. McCulloch cv: BSc in physics (York. 1991). PhD in ocean physics (Liverpool, 1995). Ocean & wave model scientist (Met Office, 1998-2008). Suggested new physics (2007). Lecturer (University of Plymouth, 2008-2023). Funded to develop new physics into a thruster by DARPA (2017-2023). McCulloch published 26 peer reviewed papers, explaining inertial mass (quantised inertia/QI). The theory predicts galaxy rotation without dark matter, a clean way to generate electricity and a propellant-less quantum thruster. Received $1.3M from DARPA to test the latter and four labs so far have seen thrust. We need to enhance this thrust and develop clean energy & interstellar applications. This talk was presented to the Charlottesville Astronomical Society (CAS) at their monthly meeting in February, 2024. The public and Society members are invited to attend in person and/or through zoom to enjoy a presentation. CAS is founded to promote the enjoyment of astronomy to individuals of all ages and levels of experience in central Virginia and beyond. We provide access to telescopes of all kinds, including the great 26" Clark refractor at Leander McCormick Observatory. We serve our members in their visual observing, digital imaging, and citizen science work through training and technical support. Our outreach efforts include semi-weekly star parties at a variety of locations in and around Charlottesville, Virginia. If you're in town, please drop us a line!
