If you watched the tour of the D'urban Park Project posted over the weekend you would have heard specific mention of the University Of Guyana as one of the sites in desperate need of the money being splurged on a one off celebration. Given that this is our 50th year of independence and we don't all have to agree, my own sentiments fall in line with those who wished that money was being plugged into the facility we hope to shape some of our future leaders over the next 50 years. Mother and baby under the hospital bed aside, if you can put something like that aside, why spend millions on a temporary slapdash wooden 'stadium' when the only national University doesn't even have bleachers or a pair of football goal posts? This year, students at the University found themselves driven to protest once again because of conditions and mismanagement of their facilities fees. I do not expect that all the problems which prevailed at the university under the past administration to have been resolved in one year nor do I discredit positive changes which have taken place but having visited and revisited, the pace of change seems painfully slow. A functional university is much more than trimmed grass and cleaned drains. Join me as I am given a guided your of the campus by University of Guyana Students Society president, Joshua Griffith. Is the PNC, PPP/C or Coalition responsible for the present condition of the university? I am leaving this others to squabble about. It simply needs fixing and it needs fixing fast. A sound investment today in a quality tertiary institution and supporting educational infrastructure will serve us all long into the future, long after the million dollar stands have been taken apart, the haze from the party clears and we all realize, apart from a clean-up that has largely focused on Georgetown, the time for change arrived but the clock ticketh very slowly friends. See what passes for brand new classroom and washroom facilities and ask yourself why, if our leaders hope to stem the tide of migrating youth, do they expect anyone to stay for facilities like this. As our leaders secure their pensions with inflated salaries I only hope they know It is time our youth get their dues and with a sense of urgency, there can be no other way if we are truly committed to making our next 50 years of independence better than the last. Follow along tomorrow with the upload of part two as I am treated to a harrowing your of the campus at night while classes are in full swing and we take a look at safety and security on campus. Over to you.
