In this video, invited guests Gustavo MacIntosh and Jyothi Vaddasery join our global plant science talks series to share updates from their research. Dr. Gustavo MacIntosh's talk is titled "Colonization strategies and resistance responses in soybean-soybean aphid interactions" Dr. MacIntosh joined Iowa State University in August 2003 and he is now a Professor in the Roy J. Carver Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology. Gustavo has a Biology BS/MS from Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, and a Biochemistry PhD from Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was a Postdoctoral Associate at the DOE-Plant-Research Laboratory at Michigan State University and then a Research Scientist at the University of Delaware before joining ISU. He is also committed to increasing the participation of underserved groups in science and to make ASPB a place where everybody is accepted and supported. Dr. Jyothi Vaddassery's talk is titled "Calcium mediated defense against insect herbivores" Dr. Vadassery is a Scientist at the National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR). She obtained her MSc in Genetics from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Delhi. She earned her Ph.D. at Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, Germany as an International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) fellow and studied the role of calcium signaling in perception of endophyte Piriformospora indica in Arabidopsis. She then pursued postdoctoral work at Cornell University to study temperature regulation of plant defense. Further, she moved to Max Planck Institute of Chemical Ecology, Jena, and worked on the role of calcium sensors in plant defense against Spodoptera herbivory. Her group at NIPGR works on early signaling pathways involved in plant defense against insect herbivores, the role of calcium channels in the process, and regulation of the jasmonate pathway by calcium. Moderated by Dr. Elisa Dell’Aglio. Dr. Dell’Aglio is Postdoctoral Research Associate at INRA (National Institute of Research Agronomy) and holds a PhD in Plant Biochemistry from the University of Grenoble-CEA (France). Her main interests are plant enzyme modulation and plant stress responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. After her first postdoc at the University of Geneva, she is currently at INSA-Lyon (France) working on the physiology of insect crop pests. She is a member of the board of AIRIcerca, the Italian International Researchers Association (www.airicerca.org), and a Plant Physiology Assistant Features Editor.
