Yusimi Moya Rodriguez developed the new choreography "Points of Passage" premiered at the Garden Pavilion of Melk Abbey in Austria in June 2014. The baroque frescoes on the wall and ceiling, painted by Johann Bergl in 1763, show an exotic depiction of items from afar. An entire room is devoted to the discovery of the Americas and shows strange plants, wild creatures and indigenous people. Since Columbus landed on Cuba and is featured with his landing ships in the fresco, European dreams of the foreign worlds are at the center of attention. Yusimi Moya Rodriguez, former dancer of the Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba, moved to Europe one year ago. She adds her personal experience as someone having travelled in the opposite direction to this dance piece, using the cuban contemporary dance vocabulary at this specific site to tell her story of migration and identity in the different surroundings. The dance piece is about imaginations and dreams of the other, being reflected from both ways in this unique arthistoric location. Christian Martinek is an Austrian composer and musician of Venezuelan descent. He grew up with South American musical traditions and studied Piano on the University of Music in Vienna. He has profound knowledge of ritual music and drumming from West Africa, its Carribean and South American Diaspora and various folkloric traditions from all over the world. In this piece he uses an ocean drum (large frame drum), the Venezuelan Cuatro (small guitar), the Indian Kanjira (small frame drum) and Cuban tumbadoras (congas) playing traditional afrocuban rhythms. He is living and working in Vienna. The dance piece was developed for the arts program „Points of Passage" at Melk Abbey. Contemporary Visual arts, dance, film and literature is shown at the famous baroque monastery during 2014.
