What is interesting is that there appear to be multiple versions of this game available for the C64, with the version shown in this video (the version that I owned) appearing first in 1983. The 1983 version contains only two levels from the full arcade game (first and last). Stage one sees our intrepid jungle hero attempting to reach the gorilla at the top of the waterfall without getting hit by super-sized coconuts hurled by said ape. A gaggle of mischievous monkeys hamper progress, grabbing hold of the player and preventing movement. If all three monkeys get a hold, they'll unceremoniously hurl the player over the cliff into the water below. Stage two requires the player to navigate across a perilous lagoon by jumping on the backs of turtles, hippos and dangerous piranha-like creatures in order to reach the other side. Although the game does contain an increasing level of difficulty, there is virtually little difference between levels and the whole game can be completed in a couple of minutes. In terms of graphics we are in full-on Atari 2600 "block-o-vision" territory, although it does lend the game a certain charm. The level graphics are nicely drawn and the isometric viewpoint works well enough. The sound is very basic and there is little on offer beyond a few jolly beeps and squeaks; it does the job and is typical for it's time. Although nicely presented, the lack of content means that the game offers little more than a few minutes entertainment value, which possibly explains why an expanded version was released a few years later. #retrogaming
