SOUDBITE: (Spanish) Mario Iguaran, Colombia's General Prosecutor: "Through information given by the neighbours, victims, and murderers - I must clarify that the murderers or those who have been pointed out for those murders are not only part of the AUC (United Arm Forces of Colombia), there are proven findings of graves that back up to the times where the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) were dominating illegally this country's region." 7. Iguaran at the press conference 8. SOUDBITE: (Spanish) Mario Iguaran, Colombia's General Prosecutor: "It is evident that they weren't counting on that. It has overcome our expectations and we may need some other resources and the total support of the International Community in the process of 'justice and peace' (inaudible) and in the exhumation of all the cadavers which are part of the truth process" 9. Mid shot of Iguaran after the press conference STORYLINE: Forensic teams have unearthed 211 corpses in dozens of mass graves in the vicinity of a town in southern Colombia in the past ten days, a grisly legacy of the fierce fighting in this coca-rich land, authorities said on Saturday. In a press conference chief prosecutor Mario Iguaran said investigators exhumed 105 bodies on Friday alone near the town of La Hormiga, 540 kilometres (335 miles) south of Bogota, in the province of Putumayo, near the border with Ecuador. "Regarding what has to do with the province of Putumayo we are on the fifth phase," Iguaran said. "These five phases have allowed us to exhume 211 corpses. Today, we just finished the fifth phase where we found, in six different places, 65 graves with the remains of 105 people," he added. Once the heart of Colombia's illegal cocaine business, the jungles of Putumayo are the scene of almost daily fighting between leftist rebels, far-right paramilitaries and the security forces. Iguaran said information from residents of the zone lead authorities to suspect that both the paramilitaries and the rebels were responsible for the killings, found in a total of 65 mass graves. Both sides regularly slaughter those civilians they believe to be aiding their enemies. Forensic teams have found hundreds of similar shallow graves in recent months as demobilised paramilitaries have confessed their location as part of a peace process whereby ex-combatants must confess all their crimes in exchange for limited prison terms. The prosecutor's office says it estimates there are 10,000 bodies stuffed in unmarked pits across this South American country, now in its fifth-decade of civil conflict. The families of those disappeared hope that the discovery of these mass graves will help them find out the fate of their loved ones. Iguaran visited Washington this week to ask the US, Colombia's largest financial backer, for more funds to help such investigations.
