The Deep South has one of the most infamous histories of capital punishment in the United States. Velma Barfield, known as the “Death Row Granny,” was convicted of poisoning multiple victims in North Carolina. In 1984, she became the first woman executed in the United States after the reinstatement of the death penalty. Lynda Lyon Block became one of the very few women executed in Alabama when she was sent to the electric chair in 2002 for the murder of a police officer. Her case remains one of the most infamous executions in the state. Stephen Stanko, a former professor who lived a double life, shocked South Carolina when he was convicted of rape and murder. His execution in 2024 exposed the dark reality of killers who appear respectable on the surface. Anthony F. Wainwright, executed in Florida in 2006, was sentenced to death for the abduction, rape, and murder of a young woman.
