ASA 103 & 104 Combo Course - Part 1 of 2 - Learning to Sail

This past weekend we took the ASA 103 & 104 combination course through Soutch Coast Sailing Adventures in Kemah Tx. The 103/104 combo course is a 3 night & 3 day course where we slept on the boat all 3 nights. The overarching theme of the course was to: A) Learn coastal navigation skills the "old fashioned" way with a compass and paper. & B) Learn the systems of a boat which is similar in size and function as a boat you might charter on your own. On night 1, the class started at 6pm when we met at the boat to come up with a meal plan for the 3 days. After that we did a provisioning run to good ole wally world. To give the course some structure, we sailed (and motored) down to Galveston via the Houston Ship Channel on day 1 which was after our first night aboard in Kemah. Along the way we practiced both planned and unplanned man overboard maneuvers as well as practicing docking, mooring & anchoring. That about all that I put in this part 1. Part 2 will have sailing the blue water of the Gulf of Mexico as well comments of the 2 exams we had to take.
