(19 Oct 2000) Serbo-Croat/Nat Demonstrations occurred in the ethnically tense Bosnian town of Brcko on Thursday. Bosnian Serb students blocked U-S peacekeepers from patrolling in and pelted their vehicles with eggs. It was the third day of protests demanding that Muslims leave. More than 1,000 young Bosnian Serbs gathered in the center of town, chanting the name of indicted war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic, the wartime Serb leader, and cursing Bosnian Muslims. Elite Bosnian riot police, commanded by the NATO-peacekeeping force, were sent into town on Thursday after local police appeared to be losing control. The crowd shoved its way through a police cordon in front of the town hall and entered to present demands to municipal authorities. SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat) "There will be no compromise over the demands. I hope they will meet our demands. Otherwise neither we or they will go to school. I'm not a leader of the masses here (everybody is for changes). All demands are for only Serb schools. We don't want anybody else in our schools." SUPER CAPTION: Srebrenko Savic, Bosnian Serb student Police prevented several protesters from hauling down the Bosnian flag from the town hall. Protests began on Tuesday after a group of Bosnian Serb students beat up a Bosnian Muslim student last week. Serb and Muslim students share the same school buildings but attend class in two shifts. After the beating, Muslims demanded better security and the Bosnian Serbs began agitating for separate schools. Local residents said agitators from Bosnian Serb extremist parties exploited the tensions, urging students to expand their demands to include an end to the multi ethnic character and administration of the town. Brcko long has been considered one of the most serious potential flashpoints in Bosnia-Herzegovina since the Dayton peace agreement ended the country's 3 1-2 year ethnic war in 1995. Bosnian Serbs overran the town during the war and expelled Muslim and Croat residents. The Dayton peace conference failed to resolve who would control the town.
