Elvis’ final session inside a boa fide recording session produced one of his finest albums yet it remains considerably overlooked and largely unknown outside the Elvis community. A large part of the reason for this could perhaps be accounted to the emphasis the recording sessions which yielded the other albums of the seventies have received in the last decade or so. There have been four mainstream session sets released by RCA/Sony in recent years, and all have been both well publicised and equally well received by critics and fans alike. Firstly there was the excellent Elvis at Stax in August 2013, which was followed Way Down In The Jungle Room in August 2016. The success of these two albums led to the release of two sets chronicling Elvis final two sessions in Nashville in 1970. These two sets are probably the finest of the four titled From Elvis in Nashville and Back In Nashville, released in November 2020 and 2021 respectively, their titles a homage to Elvis’ two Memphis albums. As a result the only recording sessions not to receive this treatment are Elvis’ two sessions at RCA’s Studio C in Hollywood in 1972 and 1975, although RCA/Sony’s collector’s label has released many outtakes from these dates. Only the 1975 Hollywood session produced and album, and as a result the sessions which took place between 10 and 12 March 1975 are collectively known as the Today Sessions after the album title. There were ten songs recorded at the session, just enough to compile an album, and there was a definite country slant running through this session. One of the songs that was testimony to that country theme was the quirky Susan When She Tried, which was the first song completed on the middle day of recordings. The master was achieved in six takes but was faded by almost forty seconds in post production and became the third track on side 1 of the album. As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
