Export an EC2 instance to an OVA file and store it in an S3 bucket. IMPORTANT ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS You can only export an EC2 instance if: • The instance is stopped. • Only one EBS volume is attached. • The instance uses a supported OS (Windows Server, RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu — specific versions only). • You’ve configured IAM roles and S3 bucket access. STEP 1: Stop the Instance Wait until the instance is fully stopped. STEP 2: Create an S3 Bucket for Export Open the Amazon S3 console Amazon S3 bucket for storing the exported instances. On the Permissions tab, change the object ownership to Bucket owner preferred. Prepare your S3 bucket by attaching an access control list (ACL) containing the following grants. For each Grantee, provide the following permissions: • READ_ACP (In the Amazon S3 console, Bucket ACL should have the Read permission) • WRITE (In the Amazon S3 console, Objects should have the Write permission) For Grantee, provide the appropriate Region-specific canonical account ID: • Asia Pacific (Jakarta) de34aaa6b2875fa3d5086459cb4e03147cf1a9f7d03d82f02bedb991ff3d1df5 STEP 3: Export the Instance to OVA Open the Cloudshell console. Use the create-instance-export-task command. aws ec2 create-instance-export-task \ --description "My instance export - TEST" \ --instance-id i-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx \ --target-environment vmware \ --export-to-s3-task '{ "ContainerFormat": "ova", "DiskImageFormat": "VMDK", "S3Bucket": "bucket-xxxxxx-xxxxxx", "S3Prefix": "vms/" }' Monitor an instance export task Use the following describe-export-tasks command. Look for status like active, completed, or cancelled. aws ec2 describe-export-tasks \ --export-task-ids export-i-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx This export process will take a few minutes or hours depending on the size of the EC2 storage.
