It’s a trial by fire for the brand new crew of the Erie Trader. Day 2 of the season and already Superior is showing her attitude! An overnight system brought snow and strong, bitter cold winds to the big Lake, stirring it up and showing off some power. The Trader/VanEnkevort was the first ship through the Soo Locks of the season a couple days ago, her passage a occasion of press and ceremony. She was also the first ship under the Lift Bridge this year, arriving off the lake before any of the winter layup ships here could even set out! (Don’t worry I didn’t forget that video lol) Bet the crew is slightly regretting their haste now. The waves were strong enough that you can see distinct movement between the tug and barge, never seen that! Built in 2012 as VanEnkevort’s second vessel, the ATB type laker measures 840ft long with a carrying capacity of 38,000 tons, making her among the largest non-thousand foot vessels sailing the Lakes. The tug Clyde S VanEnkevort by herself measures 135ft in length, while the barge Erie Trader measures 740ft, and is equipped with maneuvering thrusters. The two vessels were designed and built specifically to operate joined together as a single, larger vessel, and very rarely separate, even going into drydock together. She was the first large vessel built entirely on the Great Lakes in several decades, and the first to be built at the newly reopened DonJon Shipyards in Erie PA. Due to finances she initially set sail for the American Steamship Company under the name Lakes Contender/ Ken Boothe Sr under a 5 year agreement, and for the first season bore the markings of her shipyard builders rather than the company. In 2013 she was repainted in ASC colors. In 2017 ownership was relinquished to VanEnkevort as planned, and the ship was finally renamed for the fleet she was intended for, but kept the black ASC fleet paint scheme for another 5 years until 2023 when she received her new red appearance. She remains a very busy member of the fleet, operating several routes across the Lakes. Hope you enjoy!
