Hi there, welcome to the one-minute supply chain, my name is Jide Oyeyipo. Let's explore the key activities that take place in a warehouse. In a standard warehouse, there are five primary groups of activities: receiving, storage, picking, packaging and shipping, and other value-added services. First, is the receiving process. It involves several tasks such as scanning the incoming goods, comparing their contents to the shipping documents, and cross-checking them with the purchase order. During this stage, warehouse staff can identify any missing or damaged items, ensuring accurate inventory management. Next, we have storage. Items can be stored either in consumer packaging or on pallets. These pallets can be stacked on the floor or placed on racks, maximizing the efficient use of space within the warehouse. Picking is a labor-intensive activity that plays a crucial role in fulfilling customer orders. It entails retrieving the goods from their storage locations. This task can be performed by human pickers, forklifts, or even robots, depending on the size and complexity of the warehouse operations. The fourth activity is packaging and shipping. This step involves assembling customer orders into packages, labeling them appropriately, and organizing their transportation. It ensures that products are well-protected and ready for delivery to their intended destinations. Lastly, warehouses may provide other value-added services. These can include inserting instruction booklets into packages, applying specialized country-specific labeling, or even performing software installations into equipment or devices. While these services are typically done at the factory, they are sometimes outsourced to the warehouse as a cost-effective alternative. So, the main activities of a warehouse are receiving, storing, picking, packaging and shipping, and additional value-added services. picture credits: https://www.freepik.com/free-photo/cl... https://www.freepik.com/free-photo/3d... https://www.freepik.com/free-photo/3d...
