The legend centers around Prahlada, an unwavering devotee of Vishnu, and his demonic father, Hiranyakashipu. Hiranyakashipu had a powerful boon making him almost immortal. To protect Prahlada and defeat Hiranyakashipu, Lord Vishnu appeared as Narasimha (half-lion, half-man) and slew the demon at twilight on a doorstep, using his claws. The specific form at Simhachalam is a fusion of Narasimha and Varaha (boar, an earlier avatar who killed Hiranyakashipu's brother, Hiranyaksha), appearing as requested by Prahlada. Prahlada himself is believed to have built the original temple.
