How to create a UX Sitemap from scratch? (Information Architecture)

Sitemapping as a UX Designer (UX Design Basics) • 📗 Grab your e-book copy today: https://www.gleanux.com/learn-ux • In this video, I’ll guide you through the process of creating a sitemap from scratch—a critical step in UX design that gives you a complete, bird's-eye view of an application or website’s structure. Sitemaps are an essential tool for designing user-friendly navigation, helping you visualize the layout and flow of information before diving into design. We’ll start by discussing what a sitemap is and why it's valuable for UX design. Essentially, a sitemap outlines the primary navigation structure, like the navigation bar or menu items, and provides a hierarchical map of the information within each section. To demonstrate, we’ll build a sitemap for an e-learning platform similar to Udemy, which offers various courses and features. Before creating a sitemap, you'll need a clear understanding of your users, the business goals, the competition, and the product’s current state. Having a raw list of required features and content is helpful, even if it's not fully refined. Collaborating with the product manager or stakeholders to gather requirements is key. For our example, the target users are students, and the platform will include features like course saving, offline downloads, reviews, and diverse course offerings. The next step is to map out all the possible features and information. I’ll show you how to use sticky notes or digital tools to visualize this list. This setup makes it easy to see everything in one place and provides a quick sense of the project’s scope. After listing, we’ll group related features, organizing them in ways that make sense to users. Features that overlap across categories can be duplicated on separate sticky notes to illustrate their relationship within different contexts. Finally, we’ll prioritize features by their importance. This helps in structuring the sitemap, with the highest-priority features forming the top-level navigation. I’ll wrap up by showing the finished sitemap, presenting a clear, organized view of our e-learning platform. Sitemaps are foundational in UX design but are just one part of the process. I’ve created a comprehensive framework covering everything from user flows to components, designed to help UX designers tackle projects from start to finish.
