One of the highlights of the Banter Salon to date, this featured two award-winning foreign correspondants talking about world affairs. Ed Vulliamy, The Observer's fascinating writer, talked about the fraught, bloody, vicious war between drug cartels carried out on the wild frontier that is the Mexico-American border. We were then joined by The Irish Times' foreign affairs correspondant Mary Fitzgerald as she discussed the state of the land in Mali and Algeria, the post-Arab Spring world and how seismic changes in Egypt and Libya may play out in the long term. Mary and Ed then discussed the role of the war correspondant in the modern media and the dangers faced in the field.
